SOC 104 Introduction to Sociology

Module Description: This module introduces students to the fundamentals of sociology, its development over history, its principles and theories, its research methodologies, and its real-world implementation and practices. The module will engage with and tackle critical questions such as: what is society? What makes a society? How does it emerge? What is the role of individuals in it? How does society affect our own lives? And what roles does it play in the formation of polity, economy, industry, culture, and language? These questions will be answered through the scope of a variety of sociological traditions spanning from the classical age such as the works of Marx, Durkheim, and Weber, to their contemporary heirs such as Bourdieu, Habermas, Giddens, and Latour. Topics covered include methodology of sociological research, culture, social interaction, social structure, social control, global inequality, stratification, education, government, and the economy.
