EDU 558 Developmental and Social Psychology: Reading list

EDU 558 Developmental and Social Psychology

Department: Master of Education

Module Description: The module explores perspectives in the field of developmental and social psychology from a critical and analytical standpoint. It aims to provide students with a deeper understanding of theoretical frameworks, research methodologies, and practical implications of developmental and social psychology while critically evaluating the underlying assumptions and dominant paradigms within the field of education. Students will engage with diverse perspectives of relevant theories, analyse how the perspectives challenge traditional notions of human development; analyse their impact on behaviour, learning, motivation, and how to address developmental, social and educational issues. Lectures will cover human development including birth, infancy, early experiences; changes in socio-emotional and cognitive development before and during adolescence, adulthood; old age. The lectures on social psychology will provide an overarching and critical understanding of concepts and themes that explain social behaviour in terms of internal characteristics of a person (such as cognitive mental processes) and external influences (such as groups and the social environment). The themes will include the self, attitude formation and change; attribution theories; pro-social behaviour and intra-group processes.
