Thesis/dissertation/project template

Please read the guidelines for thesis, dissertation and project submission before you start working on it. Use the below word template for thesis / dissertation & project submissions. These templates will help you write your research in the format required by the university. It complies with the requirements specified in the submission guidelines for title pages, preliminary pages, heading styles, pagination, section breaks, margins, font size, and style.

Any submission that is not in the standard format will be rejected.

 

Formatting guidelines

▶ Setting up the Document

Margins:

  • Left: 2.5 cm
  • Right: 3 cm
  • Top: 3 cm
  • Bottom: 2 cm

Font:

  • Times New Roman, 12pt (main text)

Line Spacing:

  • Double spacing throughout (including references)
  • No extra spaces between headings and paragraphs

Alignment and indentation:

  • Left-aligned text throughout (no full justification)
  • First line of paragraphs indented by 0.5 inch or one-tab, except abstract
▶ Preliminary Pages 

Tile page:

  • Must follow the official BUiD template.
  • The title of the thesis and dissertation should not exceed 15 substantive word.

▶ Content Listings

Table of contents

  • List only up to level 3 headings in the table of contents.
  • Use the automatic table of contents. Keep updating it as you make changes in the document.

List of tables

  • Use the automatic list of figures. Keep updating it as you make changes in the document.

List of figures

  • Use the automatic list of figures. Keep updating it as you make changes in the document.

List of definitions and/or abbreviations 

▶ Headings & Subheadings

Use APA 7th heading levels (up to 5 levels). Be consistent throughout. Examples provided.

▶ Tables
  • Components: Table number (bolded, left-aligned), title (title case, left-aligned), table itself, notes (italic, below), source (if any).
  • The number and name of the table should be on the top.
  • Ensure the table number and caption are on separate lines
  • Catio must be in title case.
  • Keep all tables left aligned and within the margins of the page.
  • For the table structure, use only horizontal lines where necessary for clarity. Avoid vertical lines.

▶ Figures
  • Components: Figure number (bolded, left-aligned), title (title case, left-aligned), figure itself, legend (if any), notes (italic, below), source (if any).
  • The number and name of the figure should be on the top.
  • Keep all figures left aligned and within the margins of the page.
  • Figures include charts, graphs, drawings, maps, and illustrations.

▶ Pagination
  • Use “section breaks” and the numbers should be at the upper right-hand corner of the page.
  • Preliminary pages are section 1, and these are not numbered (title page, declaration, copyright, abstracts, dedication, acknowledgements). 
  • The table of contents until the abbreviation is section 2 and these are numbered in Roman numerals i, ii, iii, iv…. 
  • The chapters until the end are section 3 with Arabic numbers 1, 2, 3, …...
